Unions on The Columbian

The local labor unions have created a resolution reviewing lack of fairness by the local newspaper, The Columbian.  Here is the complete text of that resolution:

Whereas, The Columbian is the local community paper for the greater Vancouver/Southwest Washington area; and,
Whereas, working class people, union members, and public servants are members of this community, deserving respect from our local newspaper; and,
Whereas, The Columbian continues to publish articles that are biased against and inflammatory toward working class people, union members and public employees in this community; and,
Whereas, The Columbian prints opinion pieces by writers such as Ron Brunnell (AWB) as news articles, not opinion pieces; and,
Whereas, The Columbian is unabashedly anti-labor, especially toward public servants, unreasonably calling for more cuts from their wages and benefits without reporting on the losses they have already suffered and the sacrifices they have made.
Now, Therefore, Be it Resolved that the Southwest Washington Central Labor Council and any other affected union members, public employees or working class people will not use their dwindling resources to support The Columbian from February 2011 to August 2011 - to include subscriptions and advertisements of The Columbian; and
Be it further resolved that members who already have cancelled their subscriptions due to The Columbian’s anti-working class, anti-union, anti-public employee bias, write letters to the Editor, Publisher and circulation departments explaining why; and
Be it further resolved that AFSCME/WFSE Local 313 respectfully recommends to the SW Washington Labor Council that The Columbian be placed on the Do Not Patronize list; and
Be it finally resolved that in August 2011the Southwest Washington Central Labor Council will determine if the local paper represents all of the community and should be supported at that time.

Tim Probst To Hold Town Hall

This was well attended.  All 3 17th Legislators; Sen Benton, Reps, Probst & Harris were there and performing.  The biggest issue was the CRC.  The 3 legislators are drafting a letter to the state legislature to convey the public desires about the CRC and the pending vote.

17th LD Representative Tim Probst in coordination with Rep. Paul Harris (R) and Sen. Don Benton (R) is hosting a town hall meeting:

Saturday March 12th from 9am - 11am
Mountain View High School Auditorium
1500 SE Blairmont Dr.

Vancouver, WA 98683

Event Schedule:
9 - 9:30 am                  Mingling, informal discussion
9:30 – 10:30 am          Q&A
10:30 – 11:00 am        Additional time for informal discussion

All citizens of the 17th Legislative District are invited to attend and encouraged to participate.

Representative Probst who last Novemember won re-election for his second term has in just a few years quickly established a reputation as a talented and respected legislator.

Sharehouse - One Hundred and eight pounds of food was delivered to the Sharehouse for its Backpack program, recently.  Backpack provides donated food for kids to take home on weekends to homes that don't have enough food for the kids to eat.

This was very successful with 42 attendees.  Activist training will be repeated again this year.  Votebuilder training will be presented Sat April 23. 12:00 -2:00 PM ILWU.

The Clark County Democratic Central Committee is sponsoring an activist training on Saturday February 19th from 9am - Noon at the ILWU Labor Hall (1205 Ingalls St, Vancouver).  All PCO's and active Democrats are encouraged to attend.

The training will consist of games, role playing, introductory VoteBuilder training, canvassing techniques and a wealth of tools and knowledge for anyone interested in helping to elect Democrats in the future.  Join local campaign veterans as they share their experiences, insight and campaigning skills.

This will be the first (and most broad) of 3 training sessions this year.  It is a great opportunity to meet other active Democrats and hear about the exciting events and volunteer opportunities planned for a busy 2011.
