17th LD Watches "The Rumble" at Irishtown
The Rumble Watch Party.
News from the 17th Legislative District: On October 6th, approximately 25 people gathered at the Irishtown Pub in east Vancouver to watch fake news anchor Jon Stewart debate conservative pundit Bill O'Reilly. The event was dubbed "The Rumble in the Air Conditioned Theater". Due to the demand for the live streaming event, 13 servers around the world crashed and even celebrities took to Twitter to tweet their displeasure at being unable to access the event online. So, after some technical difficulties, the 17th LD was finally able to get the event on the big screen to the delight of the attendees. Jon Stewart is 5'7" and Bill O'Reilly is 6'4". To even the match, Jon Stewart had a platform he could stand on behind the podium and could raise the platform to make himself the same height or taller than O'Reilly. In his signature comedic fashion, Jon Stewart mopped the floor with Bill O'Reilly. Stewart successfully pointed out again and again how conservatives, like O'Reilly, view government assistance to corporations and the wealthy as necessary but assistance to low-income, unemployed, people with disabilities and investments in education, infrastructure, and healthcare as a government hand-out. After the pre-screened questions at the podium, Stewart and O'Reilly came downstage to sit in chairs facing the audience to answer audience and online questions. At one point in the debate, O'Reilly mentioned Clint Eastwood's comments at the Republican National Convention to which Jon Stewart jumped up and knelt beside his empty chair to have a conversation with "empty-chair Clint Eastwood." A good time was had by all! If interested, you can access the replay of the debate for $4.95 at www.therumble2012.com. Half the proceeds will go to charity. Many thanks to Robert Chu who won the 17th LD 50/50 drawing and donated the proceeds to the 17th LD to support our candidates!

Tim Probst pledges clean campaign. Benton does not.

Two weeks ago, Don Benton said he would sign and follow the League of Women Voters' Clean Campaign Pledge.
"Benton, who said he's always signed the pledge, said he has never used an approach that he considers negative." (Columbian, July 14, 2012.)
In that case, Don Benton should go ahead and sign the pledge, and follow it. The pledge says candidates won't lie or distort the truth about their opponent in their ads, and if some outside group runs ads that lie or distort the truth about their opponent, they will denounce it publicly.
Who would refuse to sign something as simple as that?
I signed the pledge weeks before the newspaper ever asked. When they called, here is what I said:
"I signed it because I want to be a public servant, not a politician," Probst said. "I just didn't even think twice before I signed it. It's exactly the right thing to do." (Columbian, July 14, 2012.)
It's been two weeks since Benton promised to sign and follow the pledge. Has he been following it? Here are the facts.
The pledge requires ads to be both true and provable, yet he has sent mailers to tens of thousands of voters with claims that are neither true nor provable. See this newspaper article: http://www.columbian.com/weblogs/political-beat/2012/jul/24/benton-probst-begin-to-trade-jabs-in-senate-race/.
Benton also sent out an electronic ad, admitting that he missed an amazing 299 votes in the last 4 years. He then he seemed to say that was really not a problem, because "I have never missed a vote where my vote would have changed the outcome."
Again, you be the judge.
-
In 2009, Senate Bill 5433 allowed localities throughout the state more flexibility for raising taxes. The Republican party opposed the bill. Don Benton was the only Senator who did not show up to cast his vote. The bill tied, 24-24, and therefore went to the Lt. Governor, who cast the tie-breaking vote and passed the bill. (Olympian, 5/2/09, and public voting records.)
-
The budget vote that funded WSU Vancouver's first freshman class passed on a vote of 25-23. Benton was the only Senator in the entire state to miss that vote. What if 2 or 3 other Senators had simply decided not to show up for that vote? (Columbian, 3/31/05, and public voting records.)
-
Benton skipped the votes on cutting state employee salaries during the budget crisis, strengthening small business development centers, training workers for high-demand careers, creating a Veteran's home, and multiple budget votes and transportation votes. (Public voting records.)
-
In 2011, Benton missed the second-most votes in the entire Senate. (Spokesman Review, 6/4/11.) The only senator who missed more votes than Benton had to be away for a death in his family. The rest of the Senators seem to be able to meet with their constituents, complete their other duties, and still cast votes. Benton wants you to cast a vote for him, but he doesn't show up to take votes for you.
The Clean Campaign Pledge doesn't say you can't go negative. It just says that if you're going to go negative, the ad has to be true, non-distorted, and provable. That's not too much to ask.
Why won't Don Benton go ahead and sign and follow the League of Women Voters' Clean Campaign Pledge?

Rep Stonier gets kudos

Representative Monica Stonier (D-17th LD) is praised in the Columbian editorial for sponsoring an education bill to make high school curricula more equitable. High school courses are too oriented toward college preparedness and not enough toward good-paying trade jobs. Rep Stonier has proposed a bill to change credit requirements and course work to not exclude or discourage students who are not college-bound but wish to pursue other popular job pursuits. Sharon Wylie is also sponsoring this bill along with local Republican legislators. Read Editorial.

The Governor's Budget
Schuyler Hoss, with able help from Taylor Hoss, reviewed the Governor's 2011 Budget in detail. The presentation took into account the necessity by law for the Governor to present a balanced budget to the legislature, the very difficult financial position the State of Washington is in (although not as bad as some), and the emotional trauma associated with having to cut essential services.
The outcome is that Governor Gregoire was forced to undo many of the valuable programs she had benn able to put into place in the last several years. The future, with a 2/3 legislature voting requirement for revenue increases, will continue to make minimal monies available.
It was a well-developed presentation - Thank you Schuyler!

C-Tran Presentation Jan 24
Let's get informed about the LIGHT RAIL LEVY.
This very improtant topic was covered Monday Jan 24 by Jeff Hamm, Executive Director for C-Tran.
Remember, if no light rail maintenance, then no light rail, and no Bridge!
This is stuff you'll want to know about to remind your family and neighbors.
Important points from the C-Tran presentation at the 17th LD Meeting:
1. C-Tran will be asking voters to approve 1/10th of a percent sales tax increase for BOTH bus rapid transit on the 4th Plain corridor as well as for light rail maintenance and operations. If people vote it down we lose the opportunity for both bus rapid transit on the 4th Plain corridor and light rail.
2. C-Tran will also be asking voters to approve 2/10ths of a percent sales tax increase to maintain and operate the existing bus and C-Van system. This increase is necessary to maintain the fleet and current operations. If it is not passed, then C-Tran will need to start cutting services for the buses and C-Van in 2013.
3. Freeways are not free! It costs money to build a freeway, maintain it, and try to increase the capacity over time. The same is true for bridges. The investment in infrastructure helps us get to work, school, etc. and helps our local and regional economy move freight. It is vital to the economy and the community to invest in infrastructure like freeways, bridges, light rail, etc.

So Many Good Things to Do!
June 27 Meeting - Heather Melton Stuart reviewed the dire need for a 0.2% sales tax increase to keep our C-Tran busses running holidays and for ADA needs - a 35% cut in service is necessary otherwise. The body voted unanimous support for Proposition 1 on the Nov. ballot.
Other announcements included the Build Day with the 17th LD Democrats and Habitat for Humanity on Aug 27 8-4, see the details on the Events Calendar. RSVP to Tanisha - neshalynn@hotmail.com or 360-521-5103.
JUNE 12 - ON AGAIN! PIZZA WITH PROBST: It's been rescheduled for Sun Jun 12 at 4:00 - 6:00 PM at Juliano's Pizza
May 23rd - This went down in a Commissioner's Decision. OPPOSITION TO THE CHARTER/FREEHOLDER ELECTIONS: Monday night (9th), the CCDCC voted to oppose the effort to put the County Charter/Election of Freeholders on the ballot this fall. Please contact the Clark County Commissioners to voice your opposition! The effort has been voted down three times before, but a very vocal minority refuse to take no for an answer. Carrie Parks will be providing additional information at the next 17th LD meeting on May 23rd at the Waterford Retirement Village 2911 SE Village Loop in Vancouver at 7:00pm.
As a reminder: This was an eye-opening preesentation. This is an excellent organization. Craig Lyons, Executive Director for Council for the Homeless will be our speaker at the next 17th LD meeting on May 23rd. Rather than a bio, below* is a brief perspective from Craig Lyons below. We hope to see you at the 17th LD meeting to hear more about his perspective and about the Council for the Homeless...

May 16th- Congresswoman Herrera-Beutler Town Hall: Town Hall will take place at Skyview High School- 1300 NW 139th Street- Salmon Creek, at 6:30pm.
May 19th - REDISTRICTING INFORMATION MEETING: The Washington State Redistricting Commission is hosting a series of public forums to gather input they will use in redrawing the boundaries of voting districts across the state. The public’s input is vital to the process and public input becomes all the more critical this year, as Washington gains another seat in Congress, requiring the formation of a 10th Congressional district. The five-member Redistricting Commission has the rest of 2011 to set the new lines for the 10 congressional and 49 legislative districts. The public forum will be held Thursday, May 19th at the Vancouver Hilton Hotel, 301 West 6th Street in the Discovery Ballroom starting at 6:00pm and public comment will be taken from 7:00pm - 9:00pm.
May 17th - 24th - COMBATING CORPORATE MONEY IN CAMPAIGNS: In the past year, Washington Public Campaigns (WPC) has been working to combat the ruling by the Supreme Court that allows corporations to spend unlimited amounts of money in elections. During May 17th to the 24th, WPC is going to have 7 events all across Washington (from Spokane to Seattle) with Riki Ott - a national environmental community activist and co-founder of Move To Amend. During these events we are connecting the dots with how any issue you care about is impacted by the Citizens United ruling and how citizens can work to reclaim our democracy. For more information you can look at the website: http://washclean.org/hijacked.htm And the facebook event page: https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=151580008240538 For more info contact Tiffany McGuyer at 253-250-8869.
*Craig Lyons' Message
" Recently, I visited Washington, D.C. for a national conference to collaborate with, and learn from, my colleagues. Beyond the striking number of homeless people I observed scattered throughout the city, another sight also disturbed me. The capitol of our “land of the free” is filled with barricades, fences, and armed guards. The similarity of these different yet related images has left me somber and introspective. The only way we can return these community members to being neighbors living in homes is to tear down the barriers, or teach how to overcome them. These are not just the barriers of finding gainful employment, an affordable house, or affordable health care, but are often emotional, stigmatic and fear-based. Your challenge is in making the effort. We applaud all that you already do, to reach over barriers and pull someone across, to welcome them and embrace them. You listen to their stories and you give them a hopeful chance at self-sufficiency and independence." - Craig Lyons
